A happy customer will always come back with their friends. But ensuring the greatest customer experience takes more than just answering customer calls and replying to their queries.

Website responsiveness and user-friendliness is a great consideration. This means that you need to consider SEO and other search engine tactics for a great user experience as well.

In this post, we'll guide you on how to improve customer support with the help of SEO. But before that, we have to make sure you have a full understanding of SEO and why it matters to small and medium-sized businesses too.

What Is SEO?

SEO is short for search engine optimization, and it's the process of making your website rank high on search engines. Google, Yahoo, and Bing are three of the most popular search engines in the world. So if you want to rank high on these search engines, you will need to optimize your website according to their algorithm. Here's a quick run-down of how SEO works:

Keyword Research: Keywords are words that people use to search for information online. These words are important because they are what search engines use to determine what is relevant and what is not. You need to find keywords that your potential customers use when they're searching for products, services, or information related to your business.

On-Page Optimization: This refers to the internal structure and content of a website, including descriptions, keywords, titles, and other elements that help drive traffic towards your website from search results pages (SERPs).

Off-Page Optimization: This refers to the promotion of your website and its content through paid advertising, such as Google Adwords, Facebook Ads, Twitter Ads etc.

Content Marketing: This refers to the process of creating valuable content that is relevant to your target audience. This helps in driving traffic towards your website, increasing brand awareness, and improving customer satisfaction.

Social Media Optimization: This refers to the process of optimizing social media pages for search engines, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus using keywords and other elements that help drive traffic from search results pages (SERPs). It also helps in increasing brand awareness and customer satisfaction.

Link Building: This is the process of adding links to other websites or blogs so that they rank higher in SERPs. Links are important because they help you rank higher in SERPs when someone searches for a keyword related to your business.

How Can SEO Improve Customer Support?

If you have a customer support team, they can use SEO to improve the quality of their work too. They can enjoy the benefits of search engine optimization in the form of an internal knowledge base to improve the user experience and help customers get the information they need. This enables them to proactively answer questions and resolve issues faster. It also helps in increasing customer satisfaction because if you make your customers happy, they will keep coming back for more.

SEO can also be used by marketing managers and others who are responsible for managing the company's online presence, such as social media, email marketing, etc. The main thing that marketers need to remember is that SEO is not just about having a website that ranks high on search engines; it's also about having a brand identity and content strategy that people find engaging and valuable. Only then, they'll share it with others. You need to have an engaging brand image if you want your customers to recommend your business or product to their friends.

Here are some ways you can improve customer support with the help of SEO.

1. Improve Your Website’s Responsiveness

A great website is one that is easy to use and navigates smoothly on all devices. This means that it should be user-friendly and smartly designed. You also need to ensure that your content is up-to-date and relevant, and not outdated or irrelevant. This way, you will also have a high ranking in search engines as well as a better customer experience. Also, make sure that your website has been built in such a way that it loads fast on everyone’s device, because this will improve your SEO ranking as well as the customer experience for visitors.

You can also make your website mobile friendly by using a responsive design. This way, people with mobile devices will be able to access your website easily. This will improve the user experience and increase the likelihood that people will return to your website and purchase goods or services from you. Also, this will help improve your search engine ranking for keywords relevant to mobile devices.

By improving the user experience and increasing traffic to your site, you can also increase sales and profits. This way, you can also improve the quality of life of yourself as well as others through the sale of goods or services that are made possible through these improvements in search engine ranking and user experiences.

2. Improve Website Performance and UX

There are a lot of things you can do to improve your website’s performance. However, the best thing you can do is to hire a professional SEO company with the experience and expertise required to optimize your website for search engines so that it ranks higher in SERPs and is more visible on the web. This way, people will be able to find what they’re looking for using SEO and improve their customer support experience by getting relevant information faster.

There are some set Google recommendations and tools about improving website design, performance, and responsiveness. These recommendations and tools help webmasters make the best websites in terms of performance and responsiveness to improve customer satisfaction.

3. Leverage Keywords in Your Content

You can also leverage keywords in your content by including them in the title, body, or meta description of your articles, blog posts, or other pieces of content. This way, you will increase the relevance of the keywords in which your website or blog is being ranked for, as well as improve its user experience. Also, this will help you increase the volume of traffic it receives, since people who search for these keywords will come to your site.

Google uses keywords in its algorithms to rank websites. The more relevant and useful your content, the more likely it is to be ranked higher on search engines. For example, if you write an article about search engine optimization, Google will use the keywords you used in this article to rank your website for search engine optimization. This way, Google will also improve your website’s user experience by providing relevant information and content that is relevant to the keyword used in your articles.

Your customers will easily find what they are looking for. This way, they can get their issues solved through the searches on your website and purchase goods and services with ease.

4. Establish Good Linking Habits

You can also establish good linking habits by including links to other websites that have content relevant to your website. This way, the more people link to your website, the more likely it is to be ranked for a specific keyword. Also, this will help improve your user experience.

By improving the user experience, you will also increase the likelihood that people will return to your website and purchase goods or services from you. This way, you can also increase your website’s traffic. Furthermore, this will help you increase the number of customers who will buy goods or services from you.

Now that you need to establish the best linking habits, it's equally important to improve your website’s speed by optimizing it for mobile devices and tablets. This way, you can improve your user experience, since mobile users have a lot of different needs and expectations when accessing websites. You can also optimize your website for search engines by adding more relevant keywords to it. This will help improve your user experience and increase traffic to your website, since people who search for these keywords will come to your site.

Remember, the more relevant and useful your content and customer support, the more likely it is to be ranked higher on search engines.

How to Choose a Support Software for the Education Industry

Learn everything about effective support management in the education industry to stay efficient and competitive! In the worst case scenario, they may not be able to complete a test or correct their data without your reps' help, thus it is important that you enable both self-service tools and instant messaging.

Support software has also proved helpful in saving educational institutions' money by halving costs while streamlining complete support processes, enabling them to use their budget for other relevant student needs.

This demand has been recognized, which is why education software market amassed worldwide revenue of about 10.4 billion in 2021.

Having a look at the definition of helpdesk software will give you a better understanding of why it should be implemented in your educational institute.

According to FinancesOnline:

,,The main purpose of helpdesk software is to immediately respond to customers’ technical queries and other relevant questions. The core responsibility of the helpdesk customer service support software team is to provide a centralized solution and handle queries coming from various sources like social media channels, live chat programs, email addresses, and even through phone calls."

Secure helpdesk software makes it possible for the support team to respond as quickly as possible while keeping the valuable customer data safe. Simultaneously, they can also keep record of customer conversations and other relevant information.

Why Customer Support Software Is Crucial for the Education System

Students are customers! The earlier you understand this, the better student experiences you will provide. To establish personalized and interactive educational experiences for students and teachers, it’s important to spend a considerable budget on IT. Providing exceptional support services has always remained a big challenge for educational organizations, because it can be hard to deal with students and its parents, but also because it was considered as a secondary goal.

However, in today's quite saturated traditional and online education market, the need for memorable support experiences is at its peak. To attract talents and increase your student fees, you simply need to be the best at everything.

Moreover, events like the pandemic have clearly revealed that the remote management of information and data is possible only through support software. In fact, support software has turned out to be the most cost-effective option for educational organizations regardless of the needs during the pandemic crises.

To maintain a productive educational environment, students and teachers need a strong system that can connect them instantly with one another and provide them with a high interactivity level, as well as, to safeguard their data and respect local data laws. And only an advanced Helpy security helpdesk, which is bult for the education industry can do that!

Things to Consider While Choosing a Secure Helpdesk Software, and How Specific Features Benefit the Education Industry!

Organizations must be serious about data control, and the education system is no exception.

Here are some of the few features that must be present in secure support helpdesk software to maintain a very high interactivity level.

Email and Request Tracking

As the trend of remote education is increasing day by day, you may be losing count of unanswered requests. This is where software support for the education industry comes into play. The educational system should have an advanced setup to ensure the smooth handling of all queries from teachers, students, and parents.

With an efficient software, every query is assigned a unique reference number to ensure the request record is clear and easy to access. In this way, you can always refer your query by showing that you have a request number.

This allows students and parents to better connect with teachers and quickly access previous communication history during the interaction.

An All-In-One Solution That Meets Virtual Schools’ Needs

A helpdesk is one and only technology that solves individual student problems remotely. A reliable helpdesk software supports the regular and substantive interaction between students and teachers in real time.

Estimates reveal that the trend of the education software market will continue increasing and reach 11.3 billion by 2024. Thus, it is clear that in today's digital age, the education sector seeks for digital solutions too.

Keep in mind that the core competence of the education system depends on high productivity levels. In most cases, a school that uses one or more technologies to improve human interaction progresses more rapidly than others.

Keeping Records in a Single Place

With a highly responsive and modern interface, helpdesk software should assist you in keeping record of all emails and responses in a single place. Multi-channel support ticketing is a feature through which you get all the responses on a single dashboard and can immediately go through them. Through a strong knowledge base, customers can find solutions to their unique problems and access live chat when the helpcenter fails to answer their questions. Support education software should have a world-class self-serve help center, such as the one that Helpy offers, especially due to the fact that today's students are digital natives that love trying to find the solutions by themselves first.

No compromise should be made on the privacy and safety of customers’ information, thus of the student's too. Now, it’s time to think about the subject line of your email.

The subject line is the first thing customers see when they open your email. If it’s not enticing enough, they might delete it or click on the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email without even reading any of its content!

So, how should you write an effective subject line? We all know the basic points: keep it short. The length of your subject line should be between 50 and 75 characters. It’s better if it’s shorter because it will make it easier for customers to read and process what you have to say. It’s also important to use emoticons, as emoticons are symbols used in text messages that express emotion or feelings.

Below are seven useful tips that guarantee you will successfully capture your target audiences’ attention.

1. Make It Memorable

When you want to make your email subject line memorable, use words that are easy for people to remember. The more memorable words you use in your subject line, the higher the chances of getting read by your audience and ultimately getting your emails opened by them. Choose words that are easy for people to remember like download, free, offer, sale, etc. This way, it will be easier for them to open the email and read what is inside it without even thinking twice or being afraid of not finding anything good inside your message.

2. Be Specific About What You Offer in Your Subject Line

Give the right details about what you are offering in your email subject line. Make sure that you are not misleading your customers by giving them a generic subject like “Download Free” or “Free Download.” Most of the time, people will read the email and then look at the content inside it without reading the complete email first. Make sure that your subject line is clear and specific about what is inside it.

3. Use a Unique Call To Action in Your Email Subject Line

Whenever you write an email, always include a call to action in your email subject line so that people can easily see what to do next. For instance, if you want to offer free downloads of software or articles, make sure that you include a unique call to action like “Download Free Software Now!” or “Read Today’s Article Here for Free!” This way, it will be easy for your customers to know exactly what to do next.

4. Try brainstorming with different questions that can be used in your email subject line like “Have You Read Our Latest Article?” or “Are You Interested in Downloading Free Software Today?” You can also ask for their opinion on the subject by asking them questions like “Do You Think It’s Worth Reading This Article?” or “Do You Think This Software Is Worth Downloading or Not?”

6. It involves a complete customet journey, from the first minute until they become loyal to you and continue buying from you.

Why Is Customer Experience So Important?

Customer experience is important because it helps businesses understand their customers, which in turn helps them tailor their products and services accordingly. Your customer's experience with your brand will determine whether they will continue to purchase from you or not.

How Does Customer Experience Work?

The key elements of a good customer experience are:

The customer's perception of the company and its products or services.

The quality of service provided by the company.

The experience that customers have with a product or service.

How much they trust the company.

Industry leaders focus consider these elements while aiming to provide remarkable cutomer expereinces. However, it is also important to look at the other factors that can affect customer loyalty, such as:

1. Loyalty Programs

A loyalty program is one of the best ways for any business to increase customer loyalty. Loyalty programs are beneficial for both customers and businesses because it rewards customers and helps companiess build a more personal relationship with their buyers, which can even increase brand recognition. It also increases the chances of repeat purchases by encouraging customers to return for more rewards.

According to a study by Credit Karma, every $1 spent on a loyalty program can generate up to $4 through increased sales and purchases. A good example is McDonalds, which has had an average of 18% annual growth rate in their number of customers since they introduced their rewards program in 1987. Another example is Starbucks, where they have an average annual growth rate of 20% since introducing their star rewards program in 2003.

2. Customer Service

Excellent customer service is another important factor that can boost customer loyalty. According to a study by the American Customer Satisfaction Index, customer service is the number one factor that determines customer loyalty.

Both quality of your product or service and customer support affect the quality of your customer experiences. According to an article by The Wall Street Journal, U.S. companies that provide great customer service have had an average annual growth rate of 33%. But how to ensure the incredible customer experience? Partner with the most efficient and secure customer support platform to enjoy a fully streamlined support procesess in real time and AI and live chat advanced performance that today customers adore.

3. Social Media

Social media has become a very powerful marketing tool for businesses that want to increase customer engagement and customer aquisition rate. Social media can help businesses boost brand awareness, increase word of mouth referrals, create brand advocates, and build a more personal relationship with customers, which will boost their loyalty towards the brand.

It also helps businesses engage with customers on a more personal level through blogs and forums and popular social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Facebook has had an average annual growth rate of 25% since introducing its fan page back in February 2006. Similarly, Twitter has had average annual growth rate of 20% since its first page launch March 2010.

4. Customer Service Technology

Customer service technology is another important factor that plays an important role in customer loyalty. The use of technology has spread throughout all industries with the help of companies like Helpy.io, which is trusted by both global and local businesses.

Helpy.io seurity helpdesk helps businesses increase their efficiency and improve customer satisfaction rate by automating tasks like emailing, live chat, phone calls, and AI instant messaging. Just click here.

5. Capture Customer Feedback in Real-Time

The ability to capture customer feedback in real-time is another factor that plays a major role in boosting customer loyalty. Recently, many companies have started using social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to provide customers with the ability to leave feedback and reviews.

However, what if there is a an Instagram glitch or a novel Facebook data breach? It is always better to keep important things in your own house, thus you better have more control over your company conversations and data, such as CSAT survey.

However, social media presence is still relevant to your business success. A good example is JetBlue, which has had an average annual growth rate of 26% since introducing its Facebook page back in March 2011. Another example is Yelp, which has had an average annual growth rate of 25% since introducing its Twitter page back in May 2009.

The Impact of Bad Experience on Customer Loyalty

As you can see, customer loyalty is one of the most important factors that affect a company’s success massively. Poor customer service can have a huge impact on company's profit, as it can eventually cause them to lose customers. A good example is British Airways, which were recently forced to cancel flights after they failed to provide their customers with food and water during a flight delay. This caused them to lose thousands of customers who were willing to travel with them all around the world.

Other examples of bad customer experience include:

1. Unresponsive User Interface

The user interface of a company's customer service system should be easy to use and responsive. This means that the system should be able to respond quickly to queries and notifications. The customer's satisfaction can be improved significately if the company responds quickly because customers will feel that the company appreciates their time and effort and is interested in their feedback.

2. Negative Interactions With Customer Service Representatives

Customer service representatives are often the first point of contact for the customers. They should be polite and friendly to their customers and especially empathetic. If they are not, then it is likely that the customer will feel frustrated with the company in a way that will eventually affect their loyalty drastically. Empathy is critical to todays success in the oversaturated global market and here is how you can achieve it.

3. Poor Service

Poor customer service can have a huge impact on customer loyalty because customers can feel that the company does not care about their satisfaction. If this is true, then it is likely that they will consider leaving and going to your competitor, which seems to have better customer support.

4. Lack of Transparency

Companies should provide complete transparency about their services and products. This means that if there are any problems with their services or products, then they should provide an official statement about them so that customers can make an informed decision before purchasing them. The transparancy of data collection and a complete company's data policy are the key ingridients for succsefuul establishment of long-term relationships with your customers.

Customer trust costs companies the most, thus make sure to build and maintain it the right way. Helpy Pro ensures the complete ownership of company database, however, both Helpy Pro and Helpy SaaS offer advanced data protection using SSO technolgoy, Data Masking, and Employee Permissions. With Helpy, you can rest assured that your customers will trust you with their data because they will be able to read the company policy and give their consent for any kind of data action you had in mind. Customers can't trust you if they don't understand what you're up to, right?

5. Lack of Communication

Companies should be able to communicate everything, both bad and good situations, with their customers to improve their relationships with them. This means that they should respond to their messages in a timely manner and also properly address their concerns.

Remeber, sloppy or agressive customer service can have a huge impact on customer loyalty. Customers may leave the company because they feel that the company did not care about their needs. This will make them look for alternatives which provide spotless support. You probably wouldn't like to witness this unfortunate scenario, thus make sure that your customers stay loyal by giving them what they want!

The Most Dangerous Data Breaches

We've compiled a list of the worst data leaks in the last few years, based on the size of the leak, how sensitive the information, and the company affected.

This is mainly because most people spent more time on their digital machines during the pandemic shopping, browsing, reading, purchasing, and watching videos. This automatically means more personal data being uploaded on a daily basis.

In 2021, we witnessed horrifying data breach instances that should worry any serious business. While in 2021 we didn’t reach the dizzying heights of 2017, where reports show that there were more than 1,529 data breaches reported, including the biggest act of cyber crime in the world, we have nothing to smile about. Among these 2017 data breaches, the ones that made headlines were Equifax, Yahoo, and Uber.

According to a report by Symantec on the most dangerous data breaches of 2017, we have:

· Equifax – 143 million records breached

· Yahoo – 1 billion accounts breached

· Uber – 57 million accounts breached

However, to see what happened last year and learn about the most effective prevention methods, scroll down!

Security Risk Factors of 2021

In 2021, there was a noticeable shift in data security. The most common security risks were with 3rd party flaws, spear phishing, undetected security gaps, and ransomware. Human errors were the main causes of security gaps that set the pace for cyber criminals.

Ransomware

Ransomware is one of the most common cyber attacks that blocks data or devices until a specific demand is met. In most instances, it’s a financial ransom that must be paid. The hackers will encrypt or lock down the victim’s files, usually a business, and then set a ransom that must be paid. Over the last few years, these kinds of attacks have become increasingly common, and it's something to be aware of in 2022. This kind of attack was responsible for most data breaches last year, according to reports.

Spear Phishing

This refers to an email containing a link or attachment with malicious code or malware attached, which appears to be from an official sender but actually is not. This type of attack was on the rise during 2016 and 2017, according to Symantec's report on the most dangerous data breaches of 2017.

Malicious software (malware) infections are more likely in 2022 than they were in 2014.

Here, we have listed some of the most horrific data breaches in the world that have ever happened.

The Most Dangerous Data Breaches of 2021

Microsoft Software Caused Data Breach

On March 1st, 2021, Microsoft Software crashed and affected more than 300,000 organizations in the U.S. The whole attack was executed by a Chinese hacking group known as Hafnium. The attack wasn't directed specifically at Microsoft, but it ended up affecting many government agencies, companies, and small organizations.

The attack occurred because of a security flaw in Windows Server 2008 R2, which was exploited by the hackers.

This is one of the worst data breaches of all time that has affected millions of individuals across the world. In March 2021, this malicious software caused extreme damage to many individuals and organizations.

Facebook Data Breach

The Facebook Data Breach of March 2021 is one of the biggest data breaches that has ever happened. This was the largest data breach of all time and affected millions of individuals across the world. The problem began in 2019 and wasn’t discovered until 2021. This incident exposed more than 533 million users’ personal information to hackers. The attack was very sophisticated, and the hackers were able to cover their tracks very well.

This data breach was brought to the limelight when the criminals imported data from Facebook using misconfiguration in the data importer. It is still unclear what the criminals wanted to do with this information.

Facebook identified this as an external attack and resolved the problem. They assumed that this attack was executed as a social engineering attack.

First American Financial Corp.

In 2019, an American financial group named First American Financial Corp. had more than 885 million records exposed to hackers, making this one of the worst cyber breaches in history.

This cyber breach was a result of an insecure server that was used by First American. This led to all financial records being exposed to hackers, who were able to gain access to these records and transfer them out in secret.

This attack affected many financial institutions across the U.S. and even affected other countries where First American Financial Corp. has operations. It’s still unknown what happened with this data after it was exposed.

Colonial Pipeline

In May 2021, the Colonial Pipeline in the U.S. was a victim of a ransomware attack. This company operates a gasoline business in Texas.

The attack was executed by a group of hackers who were able to steal personal information from Colonial Pipeline's servers and upload it onto their own servers. The data they extracted included social security numbers, credit card details, and even financial information like bank account details.

This cyber breach is one of the biggest crimes ever committed against an organization, and it is still not known what exactly happened with the data after it was exposed outside Colonial Pipeline's control.

The attackers in this case executed this scheme through a VPN account from a single compromised password. This forced the company to halt fuel shipping to most parts of the country. Fortunately, the operational technology systems were not affected.

Data Breach Prevention

Now that we better understand some of the most notorious data breaches in history, it’s important to talk about a few of the best practices to prevent these attacks from happening.

Have an Incident Response Plan in Place

Organizations must have an incident response plan in place. An incident response plan should include a way of collecting evidence from the compromised system and a way of notifying the responsible parties about the incident when it occurs.

This will help take care of any damage that has already been done and prevent further damage from happening.

Take Care of Your Passwords

A password is a very important part of any IT system, as it is how these systems are secured. It is also the way in which the system can be accessed. Customer data is the most expensive commodity nowadays, thus it needs to be shielded correctly. With Helpy security walls, you can rest assured that your company data will stay only yours!

Helpy password, multi factor-authentication, captcha and honeypot features guarantee the maximum data safety you were looking for. The most important thing to remember about passwords is that they should be unique and kept safe.

Data Breach Insurance

A third-best practice is to take out some sort of insurance. This can be either a data breach insurance or cyber insurance.

This can help cover any losses that you might incur in case of a data breach or a cyber attack. It could also help in recovering your business if you have suffered any losses because of it.

Keep Up With the Latest Cyber Security Trends

Another important measure is staying up to date with the latest cyber security trends. One way of doing this is by subscribing to blogs, newsletters, and publications that keep you updated on the latest news and developments in the field, and also by subscribing to forums where experts discuss these topics in detail.

This will keep you informed on the latest cyber happenings and help you see how these updates can be used in your own security systems.

Educate All Employees About Cyber Security

The last best practice is to educate all employees about cyber security. This can be done by providing them with training, internal knowledge base, or with a handbook that deals with the latest cyber security trends.

This can help raise awareness about cyber security and educate them so that they are able to spot any suspicious activity on their systems. This will make it easier for you to detect any potential threats and reduce the chances of these threats being successful.

In conclusion, we have discussed some of the most common cyber attacks that have ever happened and the best practices in preventing cyber attacks and data breaches. It is always advisable to make sure that you’ve invested in some of the best data protection software and skills. This framework is established by many states to create responsibilities and privacy protection standards for companies.

Businesses operating around the world, therefore, have to familiarize themselves with data laws for global businesses. Connecticut, being one of the states in a hurry to establish data laws, is trying its best through as a way of granting consumers the right to access, correct, delete, or even obtain a copy of their personal data. Additionally, consumer rights under Connecticut's SB893 include opting out of the processing of personal data for specific reasons, including advertising.

The consumer also has the right to obtain a copy of personal data being processed by a company in any way possible. Under the Connecticut Consumer Privacy Act (SB 893), consumers also have the right to request rectification or erasure of inaccurate information collected and stored on them, under certain circumstances.

In this article, we will make sure you understand this new regulation in its entirety.

Connecticut's SB893: Overview

Connecticut's SB893 was introduced by the General Law Committee in 2021 as an act concerning consumer privacy. The provision will be effective starting January 1st, 2023 unless the Committee says otherwise. In this regard, the term “affiliate” refers to the legal entity that has the right to control, is controlled, or is under the common control with other legal entities sharing common branding with the legal entity.

Control in this provision refers to an ownership of or the power to vote more than 50% of the outstanding shares of all the classes of the company’s voting security. Control therefore means control in any manner over the majority election of the directors or an individual exercising similar powers. Authentication implies the process of verifying the consumer under the consumer rights relating to the personal data issue.

Biometric data implies the data generated by automatic measures that can identify an individual’s characteristics. This includes the eye retinas, irises, fingerprints, or other unique biological measures. Biometric data does not include digital photographs, audio, or video recordings. It also omits data used and stored for health care treatment, payments, and operations under HIPAA.

Consent under the Connecticut Consumer Privacy Act is a clear affirmative action that a satisfying consumer has given in regard to the collection, processing, and use of personal data. It may include written statements, electronic means, or any other effective and reasonable affirmative action.

The consumer is a natural person that is a resident of Connecticut acting in an individual or household context. It excludes a natural person acting in a commercial or employment context. The controller in this case is a natural person that alone or jointly processes consumer personal data.

Who Does The Connecticut Consumer Privacy Act (SB 893) Apply To?

The Connecticut SB893 Act, just like the Florida Data Protection Act, has specific details about market actors who must comply with the Act’s provisions. The Connecticut Consumer Privacy Act applies to all businesses operating within the Connecticut Jurisdiction and those collecting and processing personal data.

It also applies to businesses that collect and process data of no less than 100,000 consumers in a calendar year. Lastly, businesses that control or process personal data of more than 25,000 consumers and make more than 50% of gross revenue from operating with the data must establish a robust data compliance to keep their operations legitimate.

Exceptions

The Connecticut Consumer Privacy Act excludes several companies and entities. Such companies are:

Financial institutions

Data subject to Title V of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act

Any business governed by the privacy, security, and breach notification rules from the Department of Health and Human Services

Non-profit organizations

Organizations of higher learning

Some data is exempted from this law, as shown below:

Protected health information under HIPAA

Patient identification information

Health records

Personal data for the purposes of a federal policy

Information collected as part of human subject’s research pursuant to good clinical practice

Information collected for the purposes of healthcare quality improvement

Information collected as part of public health reporting or public health surveillance

Information collected for the purposes of a national security or intelligence activity

Information collected by the federal government under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

Information collected as part of a census or survey for statistical purposes

Health records related to an individual’s participation in a clinical trial

Consumer information that is not required to be kept confidential pursuant by law

Inventory information from businesses that are under regulatory control of the state

Information on specific diseases or conditions owned by a hospital or other healthcare provider

If a company works with any of the previously mentioned entities, then it’s up to the company that collects and processes personal data to make sure that they follow the provisions of the Connecticut Consumer Privacy Act. While it is not required, it is recommended to comply with this law to keep your company data safe and your customers happy.

It’s also important to note that if you do not follow all provisions on data protection, then it will be considered a violation. A violation is a civil violation and can be punished by either an injunction or a fine. Top avoid these massive fines you can hire Helpy today and forget about all the potenital legal troubles.

Any information created, obtained, or maintained by an organization in connection with commercial activities, such as credit reports, insurance scores, and criminal history records would also be exempt under this law if it is used solely for commercial activities.

Consumer Rights

Under the Connecticut Consumer Privacy Act, the consumer has specific rights that are clearly defined. The consumer can write and present a request on the following grounds:

To correct outdated information or information collected and saved with noticeable mistakes

To notify the company to delete data collected and processed on their behalf

To request the disclosure of personal data, including the source of the data and how long it will be stored

To request that a company not use or disclose his/her personal data for marketing purposes

To write requesting clarification about data and inquire whether the data is being processed by the controller

Opt out of data processing for advertising and other marketing purposes

The controller must comply with the consumer requests unless otherwise detailed to adhere to the consumer rights protection. The controller is equally asked to comply and respond to consumer requests without any delays. They should respond no later than 45 days. On the other hand, the consumer is equally expected to provide in writing any request to extend the time for another 45 days.

The controller must take reasonable steps to verify the accuracy of the data and respond to questions about it. The controller must also provide a notice of its policy for providing access to the data and information regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of data. Controllers must also provide an explanation of how a consumer can contact them, and are equally expected to inform the consumer that they are entitled to obtain a copy of their personal data no later than 30 days after receiving the request.

The consumer has the right to seek redress by way of legal action against the controller if there is a failure or refusal by the controller in complying with any request made by them.

Fines and Penalties

In the case of non-compliance with the provisions of the Act, the Attorney General will be forced to initiate a civil action in the Superior Court. In case the company is found in violation of these provisions of the Act, they can be fined up to $7,000 for each violation.

In conclusion, all qualifying companies in Connecticut and those operating and offering services to Connecticut residents will have to comply with these provisions. Companies must limit data collection to the minimum, meaning only collecting data that is relevant. Otherwise, the Attorney General can be forced to take legal action against the company, leading to a hefty fine.

Consumers have the right to opt out of data processing by the controller for certain actions, thus that data will never be collected. Additionally, they have the right to ask the controller to delete personal data and/or modify data wrongly collected or outdated pieces of data.

How to Beat the Competition in Sales

Want to make a lot of money? Make sure that all your team members know the exact unique proposition value of your company. This will ensure that you are able to understand the current market trends and produce a more effective sales strategy.

Here are the top techniques and tools that guarantee you victory:

1. Learn the Lay of the Land

If you are a salesperson looking for strategies to sell your product, then you need to know everything about your offer first. However, if your goal is to gain a competitive advantage, you have to know what other companies are selling and comprehend the pros and cons of their offer. When you know their strengths and weaknesses, you can create an efficient plan that will be 100% fruitful. If you don’t know anything about your competitors, how will you be able to offer better quality and higher prices when a customer approaches you?

2. Find and Solve Your Customer's Pain Points

Make sure you make your company a trusted brand. You need to ensure that your customers know that your company will provide them with the best possible solutions to their problems. The starting point is understanding all your customers’ needs and pain points. This will help you to determine what products or services your customers are looking for.

It is also highly recommended to use Carin for instant responses and live chat for human-like quick support. This way, you will be able to learn about your customers’ needs, pain points, and provide instant solutions and responses, as well as, to make your customers happy by offering them the new generation of communication tools that guarantee maximum data security.

3. Find a Weakness Within Your Competitor’s Strength

When trying to beat your competition in sales, it's important to find weaknesses within their strengths. In other words, you have to look for the areas where your competitors are weak and use that as an advantage when creating a new strategy. For instance, if your competitor is selling a product at $100, you can make an offer of $90 and highlight that your product is of the same quality, yet more affordable.

In essence, if your competitor has a weak point and that weakness is not being able to sell at a lower price, then you will be able to take advantage of it by selling at a lower price. You should also consider offering free shipping or even sweetening the deal with additional services so that customers would be more inclined to buy from you.

4. Set Competitive Prices

Setting competitive prices is one of the most important tips that any company needs to be aware of when it comes to winning the sales game. When you set competitive prices, it means that you’re able to offer your customers a great value for their money. You need to be careful not to sell your products and services at too low or too high prices, compared to their alternatives because it can pose an untrustworthy picture for your brand and make it quite difficult to convert visitors into buyers.

5. Be Proactive and Consistent

Being proactive and consistent is critical to reducing your customer churn rate. Customers are often confused about what they want or are unsure about what the company offers. Thus, you need to be always in alert mode and ask them if they need help before they even ask for it. A good way to ensure this practice is to set up an AI-engineered chatbot who will be there for your customers 24/7. They will feel appreciated and more willing to spend time learning about your product or service. Also, you need to make sure that you’re always following up on customers who have purchased from you in the past so that you can provide them with great service in the future. This will ensure they will keep coming back!

6. Use Social Media Platforms Effectively

Social media platforms are very important in today’s world! They will help you reach out to more customers because they are already there. You need to make sure that you’re able to use all relevant social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn effectively to not waste your time and money. However, the cons here include lack of security and chat ownership troubles. When you own a security helpdesk, you own your communication channels, thus you have a better overview of authorization processes and a better control over your company's data.

7. Make It Easy for Customers to Purchase from You

This is the foundation of any sales process! Ease your customers pain, by making it easy to make a purchase at any time and from anywhere. Ensure that you’ve showcased all your products and services clearly and enabled all eye-catching "buy now" buttons. Remember, every positive customer experience means that a certain customer is more likely to do business with you again!

8. How will you let your target audience know about your product if you don't promote it, right? You need to utilize various marketing techniques such as SEO, social media marketing, and Google advertising to attract new customers quickly and keep the exisitng ones loyal. Don't ever forget, in today's highly competitive business world, marketing is critical to busines success because without it you won't be able to record a significant business growth and the risk of losing the market game quickly is very high.

9. Don't be Afraid of Risk

Risk is very important in today’s digital age because this will help you achieve your goals faster. It is true, a risk doesn't sound that tempting, but sometimes brings the highest prize!

10. For instance, if you offer cybersecurity services to your customers, then you must make sure you are very clear what cybersecurity is and what types of services you are offering. This will allow people to know what to expect from your company and what they need to do in order to be able to purchase from you again.

Data Laws for Global Businesses

The global landscape of data privacy laws has become quite complex! Are you expecting that most sales will be made online, and you'll have to process thousands of personal information for your client? If yes, then there are some strict data laws that you must adhere to. Unluckily, these data laws change by country, region, and jurisdiction, meaning you must be versed with separate data laws and how they apply.

This article will help you understand the different types of data laws globally and what it means for your business.

Let's get started!

A. What Is a Data Law?

The term "data law" refers to the rules on how companies can use or share customer data. It includes all the regulations about data privacy, security, and ownership.

The main purpose of data law is to protect customers' rights. By following data laws, you ensure that your company doesn't violate any of the customer's privacy. You also have to make sure that you comply with local data laws when collecting or sharing customer data.

Why Do Companies Need to Follow Data Laws?

As mentioned above, data laws are meant to protect customers’ personal data privacy rights from being violated. When a company violates data laws, such as selling or sharing customer data without their consent, it could lead to legal issues. For example, if someone finds out that their personal details were sold or shared without his/her permission, their may file a lawsuit against the company involved.

Also, if a company uses a third-party service provider, such as an eCommerce platform, social media platforms, etc., then the data laws should be followed. This way, both parties know exactly what kind of data is being collected and used.

B. The Five Principles of Fair Information Practices

Fair information practices cover five principles that define the basic rules of conduct for companies who want to follow data laws.

These five principles are:

1. Notice/Awareness - Companies need to let people know about their collection and use of data. If they don't, it would violate the principle of notice.

2. Choice/Consent – People must give their explicit consent before their data is collected and used by companies. Otherwise, it's considered illegal.

3. Access/Participation – People must have easy ways to get all the data companies to hold about them. If they cannot, it's considered illegal and unethical.

4. Integrity/Security – Companies must ensure that any personal data they collect or process remains safe from unauthorized accesses or disclosures.

5. Enforcement/Accountability – There should be clear consequences when companies fail to comply with fair information practice standards.

Types of Data Breaches

When a company violates one of these five principles, it's called a "data breach". A data breach can happen because of different reasons. Some common examples are listed below:

1) Human error

Human error occurs when someone makes a mistake while handling data. For example, an employee may accidentally disclose your personal information without permission.

2) Malicious code

Malicious code happens when someone intentionally collects or uses your data without authorization. This includes viruses, spyware, ransomware, etc.

3) Natural disaster

Natural disasters such as fire, flood, earthquake, hurricane, storm, tsunami, and war damage computers, and mobile devices. They can delete important files and cause network disruptions.

4) Insider threat

An insider threat is a malicious act committed by someone in the organization. An employee, contractor, or even a volunteer could steal sensitive data.

5) Cyberattack

A cyberattack is a criminal or terrorist activity conducted through cyberspace. Hackers break into organizations' computer systems and steal confidential data.

C. Section 43(b) defines computer resources as "any hardware device, software or other electronic records which can be accessed through a computer network."

D. How Do You Ensuredo you ensure Data Compliance?

Companies around the world are taking steps to meet new regulations. For example, Facebook recently announced changes to its news feed algorithm to reduce the amount of time users spend on the platform. This change will prioritize posts from friends and family members over content shared by publishers and brands.

To stay compliant with these new rules, it is important to understand your organization's current compliance posture, and then identify gaps in your strategy.

Increase Data Awareness

The most effective way to improve data compliance is to increase awareness among employees and stakeholders. Start by educating them on the importance of data security and privacy. Then, implement training programs that focus on best practices and policies. Finally, create a culture of accountability within your organization that encourages everyone to report violations.

Enforce Policies and Procedures

It’s important to establish clear policies and procedures for managing data. These documents must include details about who has access to sensitive data, what type of data is stored, and how long it is kept. They also need to outline how to handle data breaches and incidents.

Use Customer support software for Data Security

Customer support software enables organizations to manage and monitor user activity. It helps detect suspicious behavior and prevent fraud. The software also lets administrators see who is accessing sensitive information, when they're doing so, and whether they've exceeded authorized limits.

Use Encryption Software

Encryption software encrypts sensitive data before it leaves the organization. This prevents unauthorized personnel from viewing data while it travels across networks and storage devices.

Create Accountability

Create a team of people responsible for ensuring compliance. Each member of this group needs to know the organization's data management processes and have a thorough understanding of their responsibilities. Make sure they are held accountable for meeting compliance standards.

As we move into the future of data compliance, companies must continue to take proactive measures to protect customer data. To achieve this goal, it is essential to develop a comprehensive approach to data governance, including strong policies and procedures, encryption software, and robust monitoring tools.

What Is an Access Control List?

Access control list is the fundamental component of a security system, which makes sure that all the incoming traffic is authorized. The major role of an ACL is to keep an eye on outgoing and incoming traffic and continue making comparisons with the set of defined statements.

In this article, we will discuss in detail the basics of access control lists, why you should use them, where they can be placed, and their different components and types.

What Is an ACL?

ACL stands for access control list and is a list containing access control entries (ACE). All the access control entries within an ACL are responsible for the identification of a trustee and specification of the access rights that are either allowed, denied, or even audited for that particular trustee. There are two types of ACLs: a DACL and a SACL that we will discuss later in detail.

ACL works on various sets of rules that explain how to forward and block packets at the router's interface.

If you have ever heard of a stateless firewall, you can easily grasp the concept of an ACL because just like a stateless firewall, an ACL is also responsible for the restriction, blockage, and allowance of packets which flow from the source to destination.

ACL is defined with respect to the routing device and according to the specific interface. All the traffic that flows through the ACL is compared with the ACL statement, which then responds either by blocking it or allowing it.

ACLs are common in routers or firewalls and can also be configured in other devices, including network devices and servers.

Why Use an ACL?

An ACL is very important for networking setups because its main purpose is to provide security to the network. As we have already discussed, it works by blocking certain traffic, so without an ACL, unwanted and dangerous traffic can easily enter the system and cause various problems, including the entry of viruses and other security and data risks.

Source

In the above image, the routing device is equipped with an access control list which is denying access to C but allowing the system to access host D.

Basically, an ACL also allows you to filter packets for IP addresses with various protocols, such as UDP. It simply means that instead of blocking only one host, you can deny access to the entire network.

Where Can You Place an ACL?

Devices that are connected to external networks, including internet networks, should have a way to filter traffic in order to maintain security. For this purpose, you should place the routing device with an ACL in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) that creates a boundary between the public internet and private network.

Basically, the role of the DMZ comes into the picture whenever the server needs access from outside, for example, DNS server, VPN, etc.

Source

The above image indicates the DMZ which is divided into two devices. One device is responsible for the separation of the trusted zone from the DMZ, while the other is separating it from the public network.

In this case, the router is a gateway for all outside networks and it directly controls the larger subnets from going out or in. The ACL can also be configured in this router for the protection of ports, such as UDP.

Remember that the trusted zone and DMZ have an internal router between them which offers stricter rules for the protection of private networks. You can also choose a stateful firewall over an ACL.

Here you might be wondering why you should place an ACL vs. stateful firewall for the protection of the DMZ.

The answer is quite simple and related to the configuration of the ACL in a device's forwarding hardware. This process requires the ACL to perform its duties without compromising the end performance.

On the other hand, if you prefer a stateful firewall, you may end up with reduced network performance because protecting the DMZ through the stateful firewall directly impacts your network performance, and you have to compromise on it.

So, if you want to protect your high-performance assets, using an ACL is a better option because it indirectly controls the overall performance of applications and servers. On the other hand, a stateful firewall has a direct impact on the performance of applications and services.

It is worth mentioning that a stateful firewall has one edge over the ACL: it provides better security then an ACL along with optimization of network endpoints that are necessary for high protection.

What Are the Components of an ACL?

The positive aspect of using an ACL is that its implementation is simpler and you can easily configure it by using general guidelines.

As we know, an ACL is a set of rules or entries that you can easily proceed with by providing a single entry or even multiple entries, as each of them will perform a specific function, such as permitting one thing or blocking something else.

However, when using an ACL, you should have knowledge about the basic terms that are associated with the use of the access control line.

ACL Name: When you want to give a particular name to an ACL entry, it is known as the ACL name. At this time, you not only use a sequence of numbers, you also can use letters.

Statement: When you allow or deny the entry of a particular source, you provide specific evidence for its removal or permission-based on its address and wildcard mask. This logical aspect, which is associated with the denial or permission of a specific source, is given in the form of a statement. Some devices also have a deny statement option at the end of each ACL by default.

Sequence Number: When you do not want to use letters or an ACL name option, you can identify an ACL entry using a number, also known as a sequence number.

Remark: There are various routers on the market, and some of them allow you to add comments into an ACL. In this way, you can see the detailed descriptions associated with the permission or denial of data.

Network Protocol: The network protocol allows you to deny/permit IP, IPX, ICMP, TCP, UDP, NetBIOS, and more.

What Is an Access Control List?

This is the list that contains all the rules and regulations which determine the denial or approval of a particular set of information.

For further understanding of an ACL, you need to understand the types.

There are two major types of an ACL:

Filesystem ACLs: These are involved in the filtration of data, including the denial or approval of files or directories. Filesystem ACLs have the core responsibility to update the system about who will be able to access the operating system and what is the nature of privileges that the users are allowed to handle.

Networking ACLs: This type of ACL is particularly involved in filtering access to the network only. Networking ACLs directly update the routers and switches regarding what kind of data and traffic should access the network and the particular activities the system is allowed to handle.

Additionally, there are also two categories of ACLs:

Standard ACL (SACL)

This type of list , also known as the standard ACL, was developed by utilizing a broader set of information and only uses the source IP address. Standard ACL cannot differentiate between the bits of IP sources, such as UDP or HTTPS.

Extended ACL (EACL)

This type of list can clearly differentiate between different bits of IP resources by using source and destination IP addresses.

The use and importance of ACL is evident from the fact that these entries are the most commonly used ways of achieving firewall protection. Originally, people were only aware of these for their network security. However, nowadays, various alternatives are available.

ACLs can be optimized by using this amazing technology in conjunction with other technologies like virtual private networks (VPNs).

Reasons to Use an ACL

Here are a few strong reasons to use ACLs:

Directly controls the traffic flow and filters dangerous traffic by utilizing its access denial system

Improves the overall network performance by allowing only useful traffic to access the system and restricting network traffic

Provides a very high level of security by specifying particular areas of the network or the server regarding what the user should accept and what they can't

Allows traffic monitoring at a very minor level and directly controls the traffic entering and exiting the system

How to Deliver Top-Notch Support in the Online Education Industry

Students are customers, too! You can check out these top communication techniques for superb customer support and start improving your support today!

One of the biggest problems in the education sector is a lack of qualified teachers. This means that students often end up having to learn from unqualified tutors.

This issue is especially prevalent among low-income families who cannot afford private tutoring services. To help address this issue, online education platforms like Udemy offer free classes to anyone who wants to learn how to teach others.

This way, people without any teaching experience can still earn money by sharing their knowledge. Even though these online courses are free, they sometimes come at a price: poor customer service. But not just them! All online education platforms that offer their courses globally, struggle to answer thousands requests in a timely manner.

Luckily, there are tools and techniques that can help you turn the things around and keep all your students and their parents happy!

Let's check them out!

How Important Is Customer Service in Online Education?

Customer service is a vital part of every business. In online education, it is even more crucial because students are often at the mercy of their teachers. They rely on them to guide them through the learning process. The teacher must be available and responsive to student questions and concerns. However, that is not always possible and the teachers don't need to worry about technical issues related to your platform functions or the payment structure.

This article will discuss how important customer service is in online education, as well as some tips for providing great customer experiences.

Online Education: What Is It?

In the United States, many educational institutions offer courses online. Some of these include community colleges, private universities, and public schools. During the COVID-19 pandemic, online education has become a necessity! Thus, not just that the online education industry makes the education available to everyone, it also keeps the students healthy.

There are many advantages to taking classes online. For example, you do not have to travel long distances to attend class. You can take your coursework from home or wherever you choose. Many people find this method of studying convenient. However, there are also disadvantages to attending school online. One disadvantage is that you cannot interact with other students face-to-face like you would do that in a classroom. However, there are apps that enable chatting with your classmates and teaches, like Slack. Another disadvantage is that you may miss out on certain opportunities, such as field trips, fun during the breaks between classes, and similar.

How Does Customer Service Affect Online Student Success?

Good customer service can have a positive impact on student success. When teachers provide effective feedback, they help students improve their performance. This helps them learn how to become better at their school tasks. It also allows them to develop self-awareness.

Students who receive poor customer service may not be able to access the resources that would help them learn effectively. For example, if a teacher doesn’t respond to an email or calls, students might miss out on opportunities to practice what they’ve learned.

What should teachers do to ensure good customer service?

Teachers need to make sure they are providing quality customer service, too. To achieve this, they need to:

Be responsive to emails and phone calls from students

Provide clear information about assignments and deadlines

Respond quickly when students ask online questions

Make sure all students get the same level of support

Give constructive criticism

Offer helpful advice

Keep track of student progress

Encourage students to use social media to share their experiences with other students

Use technology to monitor student progress

The good news is that you don’t need to hire a team of full-time employees to provide quality customer service. Instead, you can leverage the power of AI to automate most of the tasks associated with customer service.

Here are ways you can do that.

1. Automate Email Responses

Email is one of the best tools available to businesses. Unfortunately, it's also one of the most time-consuming and insecure communication tools out there. As soon as someone sends you an email, you need to open it, read it, reply, and send another email back. All of this takes time.

You can save yourself a lot of time by using automated emails. These messages will automatically respond to incoming emails that discuss certain common issues you've marked as important.

For example, you can create a template message that includes the sender’s name, subject line, body text, and so on. Then, whenever someone sends you an email with a certain subject line, such as making an order, you can quickly send them the prewritten response.

Let’s say you receive several emails per day about a particular topic, such delivery options. You can set up a rule that automatically responds to those emails with a generic message. Then, when someone sends you an email asking for more specific information related to that topic, you can quickly forward it to your assistant. Your assistant can then take care of the rest.

2. Automate Follow-Up Questions

When someone asks you a question, it’s important to answer it promptly. If you delay responding, you risk losing out on potential sales or leads. Keep in mind that all customers today expect a respnse within 5 minutes.

If you wait too long to respond, you run the risk of annoying the person who sent you the original inquiry.

To avoid such situations, you should always try to answer every question within 24 hours. That said, you can use automation to speed things up. For example, if someone asks you a question about a product or service, you can send them a quick email that contains links to relevant articles or videos.

3. Multi-Channel Support Ticketing

If you have more than one channel where customers can reach you, you might want to consider automating your replies to all of them. For example, let’s assume you have a website, Facebook page, Twitter account, and phone number. Whenever someone contacts you via one of these channels, you can use automation software to handle the conversation. To do this, you need an effective tool to track all your help emails and tickets in a single integrated place, such as a secure CRM platform.

In addition to saving you valuable time, this approach helps ensure consistency across all communication channels:

Live Chat

Live chat is a great tool for providing instant customer service. However, it requires human interaction. That means you need to be able to talk to each individual customer. It also means that you need to monitor live chats throughout the day.

Fortunately, many tools make it easy to manage multiple live chats at once. For example, you can use Slack, Skype, Google Hangouts, and others. Helpy connect is a great self-hosted chat software for customer support live chats that you can invest in right now.

Offer AI Chat

You can also use AI chat to resolve customer service issues. This way, you can connect with your customers instantly and address their concerns and completely own their chat expereince.

Self-Serve Help Center

Many companies offer self-service options for their products and services. This allows customers to access detailed documentation without having to contact customer service.

Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to find this information. As a result, they end up contacting customer service instead. You can check out these top 5 tips for choosing the right helpdesk solutions for effective customer service.

You can solve this problem by creating a dedicated help center. Then, you can add a link to it from any relevant pages and even to your live and AI chat if you opt for a secure Helpy.io service. By doing so, you allow people to easily locate answers to frequently asked questions. In turn, you reduce the amount of time you spend answering queries.

4. Concentrate on Security in the Customer Support Department

As we discussed earlier, security is very important in the customer support department. It doesn’t matter whether you work as an independent contractor or as part of a large organization. The most important thing is that you keep your data safe.

The best way to do that is to hire a professional IT team. They will be responsible for keeping everything secure.

They can also provide regular updates to your company’s network and systems.

5. Provide Clear Instructions

Your customers shouldn’t have to figure things out by themselves. Make sure that you include detailed step-by-step instructions for everything you offer.

This way, your customers won’t have any problems getting started. You can also create tutorials to help them along the way.

6. Be Available

Your customers should always know where to find answers to their questions. That means that you should respond quickly whenever they contact you.

When you don’t respond right away, they might give up and try another provider. So make sure that you answer emails within 24 hours.

7. Use Social Media

Social media can be a great tool for providing customer service because your customers are already there. However, it is certanly not the most secure one.

8. Be Friendly and Helpful

The first thing that customers notice about your company is how you treat them. You want to make sure they feel welcome and appreciated. Make it easy for them to contact you by providing clear instructions and information about how to reach you.

9. Incorporate Exceptional Communication Skills

Customers expect you to respond quickly to their questions and concerns. To do this, you must be able to communicate clearly with them. This means being polite, courteous, and professional at all times. It also means listening carefully when they talk to you. Here are the top tips on top-notch customer support skills.

10. Be Proactive

You can help customers solve problems faster if you proactively address issues before they arise. Customers appreciate prompt responses to their inquiries. They also like it when you send follow-up emails so that they don’t have to ask again.

11. Create an Environment Where People Feel Comfortable Talking to You

You can create a positive experience for customers by making sure that your employees are welcoming and polite to every customer.

Customer support is essential to the success of any business. Therefore, it makes sense to invest some money into improving your operations.

There are several ways to go about it. You can start with the ones listed above. Hopefully, they will help you improve your overall performance.

Understanding the Florida Privacy Protection Act and HB969

Florida Privacy Act is one of the strictest laws in the USA! In fact, Florida was once known as the “criminal’s paradise” because of its lax laws and lack of enforcement, especially in data protection and data security. Florida is actually one of the states with the most notorious data breaches in history.

Today, Florida is home to over 20% of the nation’s population. Crime rates have decreased since the 1990s, and Florida remains one of the safest states in the U.S.

However, despite these statistics, Florida continues to struggle with high levels of data breaches. According to the FBI, there were more than 1 million identity theft victims in 2020 alone. This equates to an average of 2,000 Floridians who fall victim to identity theft each day.

The problem is that many people don't take steps to protect their personal information. They often fail to use strong passwords or change them frequently. They also give out too much information online, such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, bank account numbers, etc.

The result is that they become easy targets for hackers and online criminals. Most information shared with websites is used against the consumers. If you are a business seeking to mine, process, and share personal consumer data, you need to be aware of these top 6 techniques to keep customer data private.

With the increasing cases of data breaches in Florida, authorities have considered several data protection enactments. In response to this issue, Florida’s Information Protection Act of 2014 and the later update HB 969: Consumer Data Privacy was passed.

Florida’s Information Protection Act (FIPA) of 2014

FIPA’s purpose is to protect consumer data from misuse by businesses. It requires companies to obtain consent before collecting any personal information about individuals. Companies must also notify individuals when they collect information on them.

In addition, the law prohibits companies from selling personal information without consent. If a company violates the act, it can be fined up to $1,000 per violation.

Type of Data Protected Under Florida’s Information Protection Act of 2014

As we have already discussed, FIPA protects vulnerable internet users from data misuse. It has a strict component that provides all the categories of protected data and what companies and organizations should do to ensure data compliance. The act also specifies what organizations should do after experiencing a data breach. Additionally, it has a clear list of the data protected under the act.

This includes, but is not limited to, the following types of data:

Financial records

Credit card details

Medical records

Phone numbers

Email addresses

Social security numbers

Driver's license information

Bank account information

The act also defines personally identifiable information (PII) to include other sensitive details, such as:

Medical records/medical history of a user

Data pertaining to the mental and physical state of an individual

Health insurance policy numbers

Identifiers that are used by health insurers

FIPA Notice Requirements

Every business entity must provide notice to affected customers if their data is breached. Businesses must notify the affected customers within 30 days of discovering a security incident.

One big difference is that FIPA reduced the notification time from 45 days to 30 days. However, if a good cause is sent in writing to the Department of Legal Affairs, the Department can grant an additional 15 days to provide notice.

The organization is also expected to provide a notice for a breach affecting more than 500 users. In the case of more than 1,000 users, the organization should send notice to nationwide consumer credit reporting agencies.

FIPA Penalties for Non-Compliance

If a business fails to comply with the requirements of the act, then it can face penalties. This means that the company will need to pay fines to the Department for each day it does not follow the rules. For example, if a company is found to violate the act for 10 days, then it will be required to pay a fine of $1,000 per day.

This is clearly shown below:

1. $1,000 a day for the first 30 days,

2. $50,000 subsequently for any 30-day period up to 180 days, and

3. $500,000 maximum amount of penalties. This is for violations exceeding 180 days.

House Bill 969: Consumer Data Privacy

This bill was introduced to reduce instances of data breaches for all companies in Florida effective 7th January 2022. This bill requires all businesses collecting consumer data to disclose what kind of data they are collecting from consumers. If any business fails to comply with this law, it will face a fine of $1,000 per violation.

In addition, the bill requires all businesses to notify affected customers about data breaches within 72 hours after learning about them. Furthermore, if any company fails to do so, it will be fined $1,000 every time it violates this rule. In order to understand HB 969, let’s discuss each of the provisions separately.

Notify Consumers About Data Collection and Selling Practices

The Florida Consumer Data Privacy Bill requires all websites or online businesses collecting personal data to notify the users of all the data collected and the selling practices. The law provides that all the businesses or websites collecting personal data must:

Notify the user about the category of data being collected (e.g., name, address, email)

The specific data being collected (e-mail addresses, phone number, date of birth, gender, etc.)

Specific sources where the data was sourced (Facebook, Google, etc.)

Category of the third-party with whom the data will be shared

Category of the personal data that the company will share

If any business collects sensitive data like financial details, social security numbers, or medical records, then it should not collect this data without first getting permission from the user.

The Right to Opt-In or Opt-Out of Sale or Sharing of Such Data

The bill also stipulates that the company should uphold the user's right to opt-in and out of the sale and the sharing of data. For example, if a user wants to share his/her Facebook profile on another site, then he/she can choose whether to allow it or not.

Non-Discrimination Measures

The bill also prohibits discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, age, marital status, sexual orientation, genetic information, political affiliation, veteran status, or any other category protected by federal, state, or local laws.

After the user has been informed which information has been collected, they have the right to ask the company collecting the data to delete the information and ask all the third-parties and providers to do the same.

Private Right of Action

Under the bill, there is a private right of action against companies who violate the bill’s provisions. A person may bring an individual lawsuit against a company that violates the bill’s provisions or file an administrative complaint with the Department of Financial Services.

Does Florida’s HB 969 Affect My Business?

Yes, HB 969 applies to all for-profit organizations conducting business in Florida. This takes into account all businesses, whether inside or outside of Florida, that collects and controls personal data of Florida residents that meets the below requirements:

1. A business with annual global revenue that exceeds $25 million, excluding Florida revenue.

2. A company sharing personal data of 50,000 or more consumers, households, or devices.

3. A company that at least derives more than half of its revenues from sharing and processing personal data.

This is a clear indication that all businesses under these three categories are subject to the bill. The bill will equally apply to all third-party businesses that are controlled by a qualifying business.

Notable Exceptions

Yes, there are exemptions from the law. These exemptions include:

1. Businesses that are exempt from the provision of Section 8(a)(1) because they are covered by the Federal Trade Commission Act, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, or the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.

2. Businesses regulated as a bank holding company under the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956, 12 U.S.C. 1841 et seq., or a savings association under the Savings Association Act, 12 U.S.C. 1461 et seq.

3. Employee data

4. Aggregate data

What Does HB 969 Mean for Your Business?

If you are a small business owner, you must be aware of what the new privacy legislation means for you. It means that you need to take extra care when handling customer data. You should ensure that you comply with the guidelines set forth by the bill. If you fail to comply, then you could face legal consequences.

Increasing Data Awareness

It is very important to increase awareness about the collection of data. You can start by educating your employees about how their work affects customers. Also, make sure that your employees understand the importance of protecting customer data. Your employees should be trained to identify and report any suspicious activity on your network.

Ensure Data Is Used as Registered by the Department

You should also make sure that the data is only used as per the rules and regulations of the state. Make sure that you register the data with the Department before using it. In this regard, you must know how to hire trustworthy customer support reps.

Final Thoughts

HB 969 is a significant piece of legislation that will have far-reaching effects on the way we do things online. As a business owner, you need to be aware of the changes that this bill brings. This way, you can easily comply with the law and avoid penalties.

How to Successfully Run a Business During the Pandemic

Things will never be the same again! Many companies have been closed down, while others have had to reduce their operation range during this period. Some businesses, however, have continued to thrive despite the ongoing pandemic. Some people have devised methods to help them pull through the pandemic and achieve their desired business success.

There are several success stories whereby business owners term the pandemic as a blessing in disguise. According to them, were it not for the pandemic, they still would be stuck with being average. The pandemic pushed them to be more innovative and inventive to succeed during these challenging times.

The economy of almost all countries went down, mainly due to the installed curfews and lockdowns. Entrepreneurs had to think outside the box to sustain their business. New entrepreneurship practices have been adopted during the pandemic, and entrepreneurs need to adopt the latest methods of operations to run their businesses post-pandemic successfully. According to statistics by WHO, the pandemic is here to stay, so we need to adopt new ways of doing business.

This article will discuss five ways to run a business during the pandemic successfully.

Let's dig deeper!

1. Support Your Employees

The crisis has clearly shown the importance of supporting and investing in your team. You can’t run a business on your own. You need your employees' skills, energy, and commitment to have a successful business. Your employees are your greatest assets, and when you take care of your team, they will take care of your business!

Supporting your employees doesn't mean that you neglect your business or pressure yourself to please your employees. Supporting your team means adopting new work schedules that ensure the safety of your employees and establishing flexible work schedules that provide employees with the necessary work-life balance.

To support employees, ensure that you provide them with necessary resources that help them in their work. Involve your employees in decision-making to make them feel needed, trusted, and treated as insiders in the organization. Entrust your employees with new responsibilities to boost their confidence, push them out of their comfort zone, and enable them to bond with other team members.

As a leader, you should show an understanding of your employees' needs, preferences, and circumstances for their work arrangements. An example is when you introduce working from home; you need to understand that it takes time to transition and that your employees may not deliver as per the requirements. Listen to them, ask for their preference, and consider their thoughts when making decisions. Finally, you have to learn to appreciate your employees for their work, dedication, contributions, and effort.

2. Build Strong Customer Relationships

There is no business if there are no customers, and the success of a business depends on the rapport it can build with its customers. The pandemic has clearly shown the importance of having loyal customers and maintaining them. When you create a relationship with your customer, you learn their needs and provide solutions to meet their needs. Communication is the most incredible tool to build customer relationships. Have meaningful conversations with your customers and create an effective customer support team. Ensure that voicemail messages and emails are returned promptly. If you are worried about providing instant support and satisfying your customer needs, then check this offer out.

Exceed your customer expectations by over-delivering the promises you made. Impressed customers will keep coming back and do free referrals, increasing your CSAT and sales, too. Ask for feedback from your customers to understand the quality of your products or services. Whether positive or negative, the feedback can be used to gauge customer satisfaction and improve on the areas of the complaint or keep up on your success areas. Remember to address any customer concerns raised from the feedback given.

Connect with your customers by asking them questions and responding to their inquiries. New technology has provided you with many online tools and social media outlets to reach customers. Send gifts to your loyal customers to show your appreciation. When customers feel needed and appreciated, they will always come back.

3. Be Strategic With Your Marketing

The pandemic has accelerated the speed at which digital marketing is going and has changed how the post-COVID world will be. The dependency on the internet has increased by a large percentage during the pandemic as people learn to shop virtually. Thus, increase your business's online presence, as everything is now shifting online. Your online performance and accessibility will help set you apart from your competitors, and you will stand out to potential customers.

Invest in good customer relationship management software like company websites and automated customer support. You can also host informative webinars to build trust, attract new customers, and support work-from-home employee needs. To keep your business resilient and thriving, you have to stay engaged with your customers and employees online. Advertise your business on social media platforms that have your target audience. You can also try paid advertising channels like Google ads, LinkedIn ads, and Instagram ads.

To be effective in your marketing, try focusing on your customers rather than struggling to bring in new customers. Look out for your customers, clients, and staff when tough things happen. This involves giving out free stuff to loyal customers, giving discounts, or even waving loans. This could hurt your cash flow, but eventually, you will see growth in other areas such as brand awareness, organic traffic, loyalty, and social media engagement that will all later lead to a lower customer churn rate and higher revenues.

4. Have a Communication Plan

If anything, the pandemic has shown the importance of authentic and transparent communication. Customers now prefer engaging with brands online rather than in-person interaction. Customers want to be addressed and informed on the situations on the ground and what to expect post-pandemic. Ensure that you send a clear and direct message that will guide your customers and reassure them of your business stability and brand integrity.

Be clear with your communication and watch out how you make directives to your customers. Show your customers simplified ways to engage with your brand and make orders online. Address any issues directly by making friendly appeals through social media. Regularly remind your customers that you value them and assure them better deals when they purchase from you. Be honest with your employees and customers on how you plan on improving business, as things are not expected to snap straight back to smooth sailing post-pandemic. Create for them a picture of what's going on with the business and future goals. This will make your customers and employees feel involved and updated, thus they will continue to trust your brand and stay loyal.

5. Prioritize Revenue Opportunities

Recovering from the pandemic will help businesses build resilience and help them seize new business opportunities that may come their way. As a business owner or manager, you need to reframe your organization's goals to suit any emergencies that may arise. Capitalize on all opportunities that present themselves.

To prioritize revenue opportunities may include launching campaigns to win back loyal customers or developing your business's safety and health dimensions. Create flexible payment terms for your customer, such as enabling mobile transactions. When you prioritize revenue opportunities, the impact of the options will be reflected on the company revenue. This will help you capitalize on the post-pandemic world while making a profit.

To successfully run a post-pandemic business, you need to employ innovative minds that will give you a competitive advantage in the new markets. However, in today's world, both talents and technology are important for the long-term prosperity. For instance, it has never before been possible to halve a massive support costs by 50% by just one click, while now you can just click here. Similarly, it has never before been possible to successfully run a whole customer support department completely remotely, too. Now you can do it even more efficiently compared to the office work results with this tool.

Keep in mind that…

COVID-19 has reshaped the dynamics of business operations, and you have to face the new market realities post-pandemic. Things will never be the same again, and business operation modules are no exception. You have to adapt to the new ways to stand out and successfully run a business.

Employees and customers are the major stakeholders in your business, and if you can satisfy their needs, you can be assured of a successful business.

4 Effective Tips to Write Customer-Focused Responses

Your CSAT and profit can be higher! Customer-focused responses ensure optimization of every customer touchpoint, whether it's a presale, at the point of sale, or after-sales, while ensuring customer satisfaction.

Customer-focused sales responses are the support team's responsibility, too! It requires a true teamwork, a cooperation of both support and sales department, to implement customer-focused sales practices fully. Moreover, every department that interacts with customers should take part and play a role in ensuring that the customers are taken care of and satisfied with every solution. When your customers are happy, you only need to know how to write customer-focused sales responses that convert.

If you’re unsure about customer-focused responses, worry no more! In this article, we will show you four main tips on how to write them successfully.

1. Create a Customer-Focused Culture

A customer culture starts from the most senior people in an organization to casual laborers. Set up policies and bring in technologies that make it easy for the staff to form relationships with customers. Let everyone in the organization understand their roles in improving the customer experience and learn how to behave to empower customers' engagement and increase their loyalty.

To ensure customer-focused responses, you should appoint customer-focused leadership first. The chief customer officer is accountable for customer-centered strategies and processes within the business and also acts as the customer delegate by communicating developments around customer concerns. Customer officers also look for ways to optimize the customer journey map by monitoring the company's customers' experiences.

Make room for new ideas by listening to customer concerns and collecting their feedback. Train your employees to proactively interact with customers to identify customers' desires, needs, and to understand their values. Proactive customer outreach includes proactively chatting with customers in the chat box, informing customers of any potential issues with the company products or services, engaging in customers' conversations on social media platforms, and proactively seeking customer feedback.

Personalization of services has been noted to work wonders when it comes to improving the customer-focused culture. You can enable both 24/7 proactive outreach and personalization with just one tool, Carin.

Write down the proper marketing strategies that aim to increase your customers' value. Be well-informed about marketing strategies that promote customer-centricity within your business. Be updated with the new technology, as in today’s world, customer expectations are fueled by technology.

Artificial intelligence has taken the bulky work of sales representatives, marketers, and supply chain professionals. Invest in technology that will help you improve your sales and enable automated customer interaction. This will help reduce traffic and pressure from your team to answer to all customer needs and, at the same time, will save the customers time since automated services are faster.

Encourage your employees to go the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction. Do not limit your employees to using the rules written down, but instead encourage them to do what feels right by them and what builds the company as a whole. It is important to employ an empathetic team for your customers and follow up even if it's past their job obligation to ensure a customer is well settled.

However, make sure to provide your employees with resources that facilitate a customer-focused response to increase your team's productivity and CSAT. Helpy security helpdesk can take this worry off your plate while guaranteeing maximum safety of your company's data!

2. Understand Customer Concerns

When writing down customer-focused sales responses, it is important to consider all the possible customer concerns and understand their causes. When a customer comes with a sales objection, please do not rush to brush them off or bombard them with your prepared list of questions. Start by acknowledging what the customer is saying and try to understand the underlying issues. Get useful context about the queries and clarify any objections they might have.

Not all customer concerns are treated the same. Learn and train your team to discern real issues from just blabbering by some customers. Set up questions that can be used to analyze a critic, and if a complaint is recurrent, it is wise to look it up to improve your products or services.

Create customer complaint guidelines and policies for your team to help align your customer service team response and actions, and analyze areas of your business to improve customer experiences. Customer complaints are an opportunity for you to collect information on your customers' reviews and turn a dissatisfied customer into a satisfied customer.

Most customer concerns are about product or service quality, safety concerns, overpricing, broken customer promises, misleading advertisements, color and sizing of products, shipping errors, and accidental charges. Thus, you will need to create systems that enable documentation of customers' concerns, and appoint a support team who will be in charge of customers' complaints. The most advanced way of mapping customer journeys and creating a detailed customer profiles and histories implies having a new generation CRM platform that focuses on the security of your data, too!

3. Find and Define Solutions

A customer-focused sales response aims to respond to all underlying customer issues that have been uncovered. The support representative has a duty of communicating customer needs to the relevant departments, including the sales one. However, that doesn't exclude the need for the support agents to present the company's offer in the best way possible while responding to customers' queries, as well as, to prepare customers for sales pitches and sales representatives.

Do not hesitate to ask for professional help and resources to formulate a tailored solution to the obstacles in both sales and support departments, because only then you will be able to see what was missing.

Learn to be flexible with customers and engage them in the problem-solving process. Creating solutions will help keep the issues from repeating themselves, and you will satisfy each customer's concerns.

You can demonstrate excellent customer-focused responses by taking the lead through each solution and having a hand in controlling and actively participating in problem-solving. This shows that you put time and effort into continuing to strengthen the relationship with your customers and that you are helping to solve any pain points related to the use of your products or services.

Take your customers through the pros and cons to execute a solution, and always go into depth around every solution your prospects are interested in. Be honest with your customers and answer every question that may arise. Remember not to force a customer's commitment, as it should come naturally to any satisfied customer. Lay down workable solutions and pre-empt similar future issues that will work effectively both for the company and for your customer. Treat your customers with respect and make them feel appreciated, as they are your best assets.

4. Streamline the Company Supply Chain

Customers need up-to-date information on their orders and deliveries to improve the customer -business trust. Lay down the proper channels to inform customers when their items leave the business premises, the service center, and when they arrive at the customers' destination. A company can improve on this by adopting new forms of supply chain digitization and introducing technologies such as real-time tracking, end-to-end visibility, and advanced analytics that fulfill all aspects of a customer's needs and trust.

Ensure there is proper demand and inventory planning by carefully analyzing sales history, transaction data, and information from the inventory, warehouses, suppliers, and the outside market trends. When engaging in an eCommerce business, ensure visibility to a customer’s order and fulfill them with the customer in mind. Analyze the dynamics of all methods to manage orders and optimize the ones that fit most for the current order.

Packing and shipping processes commence after an order has been finalized, and the customer needs to be informed before orders are dispatched. Communicate with the customer all the prospects of the order delivery from the time the order was processed, dispatched, and the expected delivery time.

Maintain a perfect numbering system and an exact picking process to avoid any confusion of customer orders. Offer the customers an option to buy online and pick up in person at a specific location or deliver the goods or services at their preferred location. Embrace omnichannel and aim at providing a customized experience for each customer.

A customer-focused sales response aims to improve the customer-business relationship while maximizing profits. Your customers are your greatest assets, and as the experts say, treat your customers the same way you treat your guests at a party. Why? Because the customer is the boss! What does it mean for businesses? Is it only relevant to EU citizens or everyone? Where is it applicable?

The European Union has adopted the General Data Protection Regulation, also known as the GDPR, to ensure data protection across the European Union. The regulation was introduced to protect individuals from privacy violations and give them control over their personal information.

The GDPR applies to all companies processing data from EU residents, regardless of where they are located. Thus, companies outside the EU are required to comply with the GDPR if they collect data from EU customers. This means that if you are operating an online business that collects and processes personal data from EU visitors, you must be compliant with the GDPR.

The GDPR in a Nutshell

The GDPR is a new law that replaces the 1995 Data Protection Directive. It’s designed to strengthen consumer rights by giving people more control over how their personal data is used online. The data protection law came into effect May 25th, 2018. The main objective of this law is to give internet users supreme control over how their data is collected, used, and protected by online businesses, apps, and websites. The companies processing UK residents’ data must use technical safeguards like encryption, and the law also sets higher legal thresholds to justify data collection.

How Did the GDPR Come About?

For the EU to be “fit for the digital age,” the EU started on a mission to execute data protection reforms in 2012. Four years later, they reached an agreement on what these laws are and what they should entail. The main objective was the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation.

The original plan was to implement the changes by 2016, but due to several delays, the deadline was pushed back to May 25th, 2018. In order to reach this deadline, the EU had to work around the clock to make sure everything was ready.

What Does the GDPR Do?

The GDPR aims to create a single data protection framework within the EU. This means that every company that collects any kind of data must adhere to the same rules and regulations. The goal is to provide greater transparency for consumers so they can understand what exactly happens to their personal information when they are using a website or an app.

Under the GDPR, organizations have strict obligations regarding the following:

• Consent — Organizations must obtain consent before collecting any personal data. They must clearly explain what data will be collected and why it's being collected. Consumers must be able to withdraw consent at any time.

• Security — Businesses must take reasonable steps to secure data against loss, misuse, unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction.

• Transparency — Organizations must let customers know what type of data they're collecting and how it'll be processed. Customers must get easy-to-understand information about their data whenever they ask for it.

• Access — Individuals must be given access to their own data. They must be able to easily request copies of the data held about them.

• Accountability — Businesses must be accountable for any errors made while processing data. If there is a data breach, organizations must notify affected individuals promptly and inform them of the details of the incident. Click here to learn about the best ways to communicate the security breach notifications.

What Is Personal Data Under the GDPR?

There are many definitions of personal data from different perspectives. From a business perspective, personal data includes things such as names, email addresses, home addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses, credit card details, browser history, purchase history, etc. For example, if you sign up for a newsletter with your name and email address, then we consider that to be personal data.

From a privacy perspective, personal data includes anything that could identify someone. For instance, if you post pictures of yourself on social media, then those photos would fall under personal data. Under the GDPR, personal data also includes genetic data and biometric data.

Who Needs to Be Compliant??

Any company that processes data of EU residents must now meet the requirements of the GDPR. This includes any business that uses websites, apps, email marketing, social media platforms, etc. You need to scan the GDPR compliance checklist to understand how your business can be compliant.

How Can I Know if My Business is Affected by the GDPR?

If your business collects or processes data about consumers who live in the EU, then you need to be aware of the changes under the GDPR as well. Thus, you should check if your business falls within the scope of the regulation from time to time.

If you do fall within its scope, you may have to make some changes to your current practices. These include:

•        Complying with the new rules around consent;

•        Ensuring that all personal data is accurate, complete, and up-to-date;

•        Notifying customers when their data is being processed;

• Maintaining records of data subjects; and

• Providing clear and transparent explanations of what happens to personal data.

What Are the Penalties for Noncompliance?

There are fines of €20 million or 4% of annual global revenue, whichever is higher. In addition, there could be criminal charges for serious offenses.

Does the GDPR Apply to Companies who Encrypt their Customers' Data?

If your business receives personal data from EU residents, then you need to comply with the GDPR. However, if your business receives data from EU residents and then encrypt them, then you should worry about the GDPR less. To learn more about encryption requirements under the GDPR, click here.

When Does the GDPR Apply Outside the European Union?

There are two scenarios when the GDPR applies outside the EU. To make sure you have all the knowledge needed in this case, let's discuss each of these scenarios.

1. Offering goods or services

The world is interconnected and has become a village where the internet has facilitated the purchase and delivery of services from one country to the other within a short time. In simple terms, two partners living in two different countries, one in Paris and the other in Canada, can purchase Valentine flowers online and get the flowers delivered to the individual's local stores.

The same can happen when buying other properties. For example, a Dutch couple visiting Italy that wants to buy a house in Germany can log into a real estate company website in Germany and find out about various houses available in the area. They can select a suitable property and pay online via credit card. In this case, the websites have to collect and process personal data of the Dutch couple to be compliant with the GDPR.

If your company is in the UK but you offer services worldwide, including EU residents, then specific requirements apply due to the Brexit situation. You can find these requirements here.

2. Processing data on behalf of others

A person residing in the UK can use another country’s website to order flowers for their significant other. The site will ask them to provide information, such as a name, address, etc. This information will be used by the website to deliver the flowers to the intended recipient. In this scenario, the company processing the data is based in the UK, but it is doing so on behalf of someone else. So, it doesn't matter whether the company is located in the UK or elsewhere. In simple terms, if you are collecting data and monitoring the behavior of the EU residents, you will be required to comply.

Exceptions

It’s also important to state that there are two main exceptions to this law. The first exception is that if you have a social media group with your friends that collects personal data, including your friend’s personal ID, phone number, and emails, just to organize a picnic during a special occasion, then you don't have to comply. This means that the GDPR only applies to businesses that are doing this for commercial and professional reasons. So, if you are just collecting data to fund a project with your friends, you don't have to comply with the GDPR.

The second exception to this law includes all companies with less than 250 employees. However, this doesn't mean that all small and medium enterprises are excluded from the law. According to Article 30.5, the GDPR doesn’t affect them in most cases.

Does the GDPR Apply to Individual Websites?

No! As mentioned above, according to Article 30.5 this law only applies to businesses with more than 250 employees. Thus, it does not apply to individuals. So, if you want to start an informative blog, you do not need to comply with the GDPR. You may even run your own website without any compliance requirements.

Keep in mind that if you are selling products or services to customers outside the EU, you will have to comply with the GDPR and the laws of the country where you are operating. The exception here is when you are collecting data for commercial use, such as selling services and products to EU residents. In this case, according to Article 2 of the GDPR, you will have to comply.

In simple words, the GDPR can apply to different players in the market. It applies to all businesses that hired more than 250 employees and process EU resident's personal data. Businesses that don’t comply with this regulation may receive a costly penalty, which should be avoided at all costs.

To have a piece of mind and never worry about the GDPR compliance, especially the changes that are going to be introduced and hefty fines, the best solution would be to add the most secure helpdesk out there that does all the work for you! Yes, you can hire more IT and legal experts, but when you compare the cost of that to employing all-in-one helpdesk software, that may not be your best choice.

What Are the Most Common Cyberattacks?

Ensure maximum data security! Would you panic? Or would you calmly take control of the situation? Hacking has become a major concern for businesses and consumers alike. Hackers are constantly looking for ways to break into computers, websites, apps, plugins, and clouds to steal valuable information. And they’re becoming more sophisticated every day.

Hackers often target websites and apps that store sensitive data, such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, and other personal information. They also look for weak passwords, outdated software, and unpatched vulnerabilities.

The best way to combat hackers is to ensure that all systems are up-to-date, use strong passwords, keep software updated, watch out for phishing emails or text messages, avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails, and invest in Helpy.io private cloud CLI to manage your servers. Besides this, the most effective method of combating hacking is to familiarize yourself with the most common types of cyberattacks.

The Rise of Cyberattacks

In 2016, there were over 2 million attacks against U.S. companies alone — a 20% increase from 2015. The number of breaches increased by 16% in 2016 too. That means nearly 3 out of 4 organizations experienced a breach in 2016. This shows just how vulnerable our current infrastructure is.

And this trend kept growing! According to a report released by the FBI in 2020, there were more than 791,790 suspected internet crimes. This was an increase of more than 300,000 cases compared to the cybercrime reports of 2019.

In the wake of 2021, reports indicated that there was a 600% increase in cybercrime, mainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The main type of cybercrime reported during the 2021 window were phishing emails with malicious actors posing as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and WHO representatives to phish data from unsuspecting individuals.

With the increase in cybercrime, data breach costs have skyrocketed to $4.24 million from $3.86 million in 2021. In the wake of 2022, a cyberattack targeting several Ukrainian government websites, including the Defense Council and the Cabinet Ministers, was reported. A message appeared on the website with the phrase ‘’be afraid and expect the worst.”

More than 1 billion people have access to the internet today, and these users expect constant upgrades and improvements in technology. Unfortunately, cybersecurity isn’t keeping pace. It’s an issue that needs immediate attention.

In 2020, the world recorded a steady increase in cybercrime and cyberattack claims. CrowdStrike’s 2020 Threat Hunting Report shows that most attacks were executed during the first quarter of the year. The same report shows that the CrowdStrike threat hunting team took action and blocked about 41,000 potential cyberattacks from January to June 2020. This represented a 154% increase in cyberattacks. In the remaining part of the year, they blocked roughly 35,000.

This increase in cyberattacks has mainly been attributed to the following factors:

The dawn of the Covid-19 pandemic and the stay at home order which increased the time people spent online

The increase in connected devices and Internet of Things (IoT) technology

The shift to the cloud means that most personal data has been stored in the cloud insecurely

The move to 5 GB technology fuelled the connected devices

The rise of hackers “as a service’’ has made hacking tools and malware attacks available to technical experts

What Are the Most Common Cyberattacks?

Phishing

Phishing is one of the most common forms of attack. It happens when someone emails you pretending to be your bank or another company. The email might ask for your personal information like login details or credit card numbers.

Malware

Malware is software designed to damage computers without the owner knowing about it. There are tons of different types of malware out there, including viruses, trojans, keyloggers, and worms. Viruses spread by themselves, and they usually come bundled up inside another program.

Viruses

A virus is basically malicious code that replicates itself and infects other files on your computer. Once infected, it’ll use your hard drive space and slow down your computer. You may not even know it has been created until you notice something strange happening on your PC.

Ransomware

Ransomware is a form of malware that locks access to your data so that you have to pay a ransom to regain access to it. It’s very similar to a scam because people often think that if they pay the money, their problems will go away. But it doesn't work like that. In fact, once you've paid, you won't be able to access anything again unless you pay them all over again.

Worms

Worms are self-replicating pieces of code that copy themselves around your computer. They don't do any real harm, but they can cause problems if you don't stop them. A worm spreads quickly and can make your whole network vulnerable.

Man-in-the-Middle Attack

During a man-in-the-middle attack, hackers trick both parties into thinking that they are talking directly to each other, when really they are talking to someone else. For example, if you were trying to log into Facebook using your mobile phone, a hacker would intercept the connection between you and your Facebook company profile and pretend to be Facebook instead.

He'd then see everything you typed and send it back to Facebook. One great way of preventing this kind of cyberattack is the use of secure and advanced data security and privacy software to safeguard your company assets by locking all the conversation between your customers and your agents. This is a great way of ensuring optimal data protection and productivity.

Cross-Site Scripting (XSS)

This is when attackers inject malicious scripts into websites. These scripts can steal cookies, passwords, and other sensitive information. Hackers can create XSS exploits in two main ways:

By inserting JavaScript code into web pages

By creating specially crafted images that contain embedded JavaScript

SQL Injection

When you input data into a database, you should always check that the data you want to insert matches the format expected by the database. If you don't, the data can end up being interpreted incorrectly, causing errors. SQL injections occur when you fail to validate data before it's inserted into the database.

Denial-of-Service Attacks (DoS)

DoS attacks are used to prevent legitimate users from accessing certain services or resources. An attacker might flood a website with requests, making it impossible for legitimate users to connect. Or an attacker could try to overload servers with too many connections, preventing others from connecting at all.

Password Attack

A password attack occurs when an unauthorized person tries to guess your username and/or password. You may need to change your password frequently as a result. Immediately after correctly guessing your password, they can engage in all forms of command activities, which can also lead to loss of money and sensitive information.

Birthday Attacks

These types of attacks are usually launched on systems that store usernames and passwords. The attacker sends out thousands of login attempts with different combinations of usernames and passwords until they find the right combination. Once they do, they’ll gain access to the system.

Drive-By Attack

A drive-by download, better known as a drive-by attack, is a more advanced form of a cyberattack that takes advantage of the vulnerabilities in the websites, plugins, and applications to launch attacks.

Cryptojacking

Cryptojacking is another advanced type of cyberattack that uses a company's website or information to mine cryptocurrency. It is also called cryptocurrency mining malware. This includes the use of malware installed via phishing, infected websites, or other cyber-attack methods. However, these kinds of attacks have waned since 2018 because of the increased attention from the law enforcers.

IoT-Based Attacks

This form of advanced cyberattack is any form of cyberattack that targets IoT devices or networks. Immediately after the attack has been executed, the criminals can take control of the device, join other devices, and steal data.

How Companies Can Protect Against Cyberattacks

The first thing that you need to understand about cybersecurity is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for protecting your data. There are many types of solutions available, but they all have their pros and cons. For example, antivirus software is great at detecting malware, but it also has its downsides. It slows down your computer, consumes resources, and may even cause problems if you use it incorrectly. The strongest cybersecurity will be the one that works for your specific cybersecurity needs.

The second thing you need to know about cybersecurity is that it isn’t just something that affects computers. In fact, it can affect almost anything connected to the internet or networked device.

The third thing that you need to remember about cybersecurity is that it’s not just about technology. You also need to think about the people that use the technology.

Finally, the fourth thing that you need to realize about is that cybersecurity teach as well as hacking are constantly evolving. New threats emerge every day, and old ones become obsolete. As such, it is important that you learn about the latest developments in the field. Only by protecting your most valuable assets, your company's data, you can make sure you are staying ahead of the curve. Keep in mind that losing your data means that you will lose your customers, reputation and the money you have earned through years!
